Botox Aftercare: What to Do (and What to Avoid) for Best Results
You just got Botox. Now what? The first 24β48 hours after your appointment are the most important window for getting the best possible results β and avoiding the small handful of mistakes that can lead to bruising, migration, or asymmetry. Here's the day-by-day guide our Coral Springs providers give every client.
Right After Your Appointment (0β4 Hours)
Do:
- Stay upright for at least 4 hours β no naps, no lying flat
- Gently make facial expressions in the treated areas (frown, smile, raise brows) β this helps the Botox bind to your muscles
- Apply a cool compress for swelling, but never with pressure
- Eat and drink normally
Don't:
- Touch, rub, or massage the treated areas β Botox can migrate to nearby muscles
- Lie down flat or bend over for extended periods
- Apply makeup over fresh injection sites for at least 4 hours
Day 1 (0β24 Hours)
Avoid:
- Strenuous exercise (cardio, weightlifting, yoga inversions) β increased blood flow can promote bruising and product migration
- Alcohol β increases bruising risk
- Blood thinners like aspirin and ibuprofen unless medically necessary; Tylenol is fine
- Saunas, steam rooms, and hot tubs
- Facials, microdermabrasion, or any face-down massage
Mild redness and small bumps at injection sites are completely normal β they typically resolve within a few hours.
Days 2β3
Most restrictions can be relaxed. You can resume:
- Light to moderate exercise
- Skincare products including cleansers and moisturizers (gently)
- Makeup application
Continue to avoid: strenuous facial massage, lying face-down for extended periods, and high-heat treatments for one more day.
Days 4β14
This is when Botox starts to actually work. You'll notice the treated muscles gradually relaxing β usually starting around day 3β5 with full effect by day 10β14. Don't panic if results look uneven during this window; it takes time for everything to settle.
If at the 14-day mark you feel an area didn't respond fully, contact your provider for a complimentary touch-up assessment.
Common Aftercare Mistakes to Avoid
- Wearing tight headwear right after injections (hats, headbands)
- Sleeping on your face the first night
- Booking a facial too soon β wait at least 7β10 days
- Sunbathing while still bruised β sun exposure can darken bruises and inflame injection sites
- Skipping sunscreen β your skin always needs SPF, but especially when healing
How to Maintain Your Botox Results Longer
- Stay consistent β schedule your next treatment before the previous one fully wears off; muscles trained to relax over time often need less product
- Manage stress (and stress-related forehead tension)
- Wear daily SPF and use a strong at-home routine including Intense Retinol and Restorative Serum
- Avoid smoking and excessive sun exposure β both accelerate the breakdown of the toxin and the lines you're trying to treat
- Stay hydrated
When to Call Your Provider
Reach out immediately if you experience:
- Severe or expanding swelling
- Difficulty breathing or swallowing
- Drooping of the eyelid or eyebrow
- Vision changes
- Allergic-type reactions (hives, rash, severe itching)
These complications are rare, but it's important to have direct contact with your provider during the first few days.
